English 8 Course Objectives respond to literature through written and oral expression demonstrate grade level proficiency in reading and vocabulary identify and analyze characteristics of four major types of literature:
fiction, nonfiction, poetry and drama define and identify the elements of poetry: figures of speech ( simile,
metaphor, personification), imagery, rhythm, rhyme, meter, free verse,
alliteration, refrain, onomatopoeia, lyric and narrative poem) analyze and describe the elements of a short story analyze characters, evaluate importance of setting, identify type of
narration define and identify the elements of drama: crisis, conflict, climax,
resolution, character, theme, dramatic irony recognize foreshadowing, suspense, exaggeration, understatement, verbal
irony and symbolism in literature define and identify the elements of myths, legends and folk tales demonstrate the ability to use correct punctuation write a topic sentence, a paragraph, a composition, a personal narrative,
a comparing and contrasting essay, and a descriptive essay use 6 trait writing process in all stages of the composition construction respond to literature orally and in written forms
read orally with expression English 9 Course Objectives define and identify the dramatic terms: dramatic irony, soliloquy, paradox
and aside locate, access, and evaluate resources to use for an informative speech identify and discuss the literary elements: plot, conflict, climax, resolution,
character, theme, setting, and point of view identify the following literary techniques: figurative language, imagery,
symbolism, allusion, tone, satire, and irony read and interpret the authors meaning on the following issues:
psychological and emotional development, racism, sexism, and classism read literature from a variety of authors demonstrate grade level proficiency in vocabulary and reading identify the parts of a sentence, will be able to identify and correct
sentence fragments and run-on sentences demonstrate the ability to use correct punctuation correctly use the eight parts of speech identify and correctly use these verbals and verbal phrases, and infinitives
and infinitive phrases write an informative speech using thesis statement, preview, review,
transitions, and parallelism with an introduction and a conclusion using topic sentences in paragraphs, will write clearly focused compositions
with logically related ideas and adequate supporting detail demonstrate improvement in the process approach to writing define and distinguish between phrases and clauses use documentation throughout a presentation will respond to literature through written and oral expression demonstrate an ability to relate ideas found in reading to contemporary
