Steering Committe
Narrative Report on Goal Progress

After identifying areas to work on through surveys and test scores, the following three committees were created: Assessment, Instruction, and Communication. The main target area goal was the improvement of Reading and Language Arts.

The three committees then began their work of gathering information and designing strategies to meet our goal. The interventions that significantly contributed to success on the goal include: alignment of curriculum to standards and assessments, consistency in district/classroom assessment practices; adoption and implementation of Accelerated Reading program; adoption and implementation of APL teaching strategies; adoption and implementation of PowerSchool program; community volunteers to assist with K-6 individualized reading; and including ACT and Terra Nova scores in computing class rank.

The Steering Committee helped provide planning time and leadership to the committees in the implementation and evaluation of their plans. All plans were placed on the school's web page, and were periodically reviewed and updated.

The Steering Committee celebrates the successes of the Assessment, Instruction, and Communication Committees, and applauds their efforts to improve Reading and Language Arts instruction for ALL students in Laurel-Concord Public Schools. Through these efforts, not only did Reading and Language Arts scores improve, the use of best practices by staff increased.
